Hello gorgeous people, i know it's been quite a while since the last time i was here and i'm sorry for that but these last months i've been very busy especially with my final project but now i have some spare time to write on here and keep posting. Today i'll be showing some of the 5 best looks from design challenges of Rupaul's Drag Race (only from the US version) , in my opinion.
Before talking about these looks, i just want to say that the design challenges from this show can be a dream for certain queens but also a nightmare for the queens that don't know to sew and also for the queens who are not masters using the hot glue gun. As you can imagine, from these challenges some of the best and worst outfits come from this type of challenge. As usual, i will give the warning of SPOILERS AHEAD. You have been warned!
First up, we have the winner of Season 12, Jaida Essence Hall also known as "The Essence of Beauty". Jaida came into this competition as a polished and professional pageant queen so the expectations for her to do great in the competition were high and she was able to surpassed those expectations with her comedy, her charisma, her kindness, her personality and ultimately her runway looks. Jaida alongside Gigi Goode (one of the runner-ups) were the strongest queens when it came to fashion and even though Gigi Goode won the design challenge, i felt that Jaida was the fair winner of that design challenge (The ball Ball) where the last outfit that they had to present on the runway had to be made using only balls.
Jaida made this white outfit using only balls while Gigi Goode, the winner of this challenge, basically glued balls to a piece of fabric that she made. When it comes to the hardest outfit to make, Jaida's is the one and also the idea behind the outfit is so good. Jaida's outfit is supposed to represent a rich woman taking a bath and the white balls represent the bubbles from the bath and not only that she also decorated a purse and a bracelet with those white balls showcasing her sharp eyes in terms of acessories. Till to this day, the majority of the fandom still thinks that Jaida should've won that design challenge since the got the most cohesive history throughout the 3 looks that she presented which is also one of the most important things in the ball challenge. Funny fact, Jaida made 90% of the looks that she used on Season 12 and she also made her promo look from that season the day before the photoshoot which shows that she is not only has one of the best eyes from fashion but also is one of the most hard working queens from the show.
Next up, we have (yet again) Jaida Essence Hall but this time the look that you are seeing on the picture above is from All Stars 7, also known as The All Winners season where basically 8 previous winners from the show come back to earn the title of "Queen of all Queens", a crown, a septer and 250,000 dollars. This season had 2 design challenges and Jaida was on the Top 2 for both of those challenges proving that she is one of the best designers that the show has had. This black look was from the first design challenge where each queen was given a color and they had to create a look using only that color. When Jaida stepped out on the runway with this look, i literally gasped because of how stunning she looks and also because of well executed this outfit is. At first glance, this seems a pretty simple outfit but once you start looking at it more and more you can see the amount of details that this garment has. Those shoulder pads are very difficult to do since she got moslty pleather to work with which is a type of fabric that is not very friendly to a sewing machine but somehow Jaida was able to overcome that problem and creating a fantastic look in less than 24 hours proving once again how talented she is. I also wanna point out that those thigh high boots almost everytime is looked has being cheap but i have to say in this case, the look is so amazing and those boots are not making it look cheap. With this final look Jaida earn herself a top placement which is totally deserved, making her a threat to the other queens that in my opinion, up until that point were only seeing her as the angel of the season because of her kindness which is a very great strategy in a format where social skills are the most important thing.
Next up we have Raja, the winner of Season 3, also known as the season full of design challenges. This season had 4 challenges that were based on the queens making outfits based of the material that they were given and the look that you were seeing was made with only coins and dollar bills since the challenge was the money ball. Raja up until this episode she had won 2 of the design challenges (with legendary looks) so the expectations for her on this challenge were very high and she didn't disappoint by any means. In my opinion, this was the strongest look out of all the queens still in the competition and as usual she sold this look with so much confidence and with so much style. What i love most about this look is the combination of colors that she used, they go so well together, i love like the hat that she decorated with coins and also this dress looks even better in motion which is also a good thing because on the runway, the judges and also the fans wanna see some dynamic, some movement while the queens are selling their outfits. For some reason, Raja ended up not winning this challenge which is weird since, in my opinion, the had the best story, the best looks and was the most cohesive out of the Top 4 but since she already had 3 wins under her belt maybe the judges and production wanted to have a Top 3 with the same amount of wins so the queens could have an equal shot of winning the season.
A decade later, Raja returned for the All Winners season and she did prove that many years later she still is amazing at making outfits and is still considered a member of the holy trinity of fashion of RPDR and in my opinion, she deserves that spot since she was and still is an inspiration to some fashion queens from the more recent seasons.
Next up, we have Trinity The Tuck from All Stars 7 (All Winners). Trinity has been a favourite of mine since season 9 so when she won All Stars 4 and was announced to be on the cast for All Stars 7 i was so excited to see her coming back and proving to the fans why she is considered one of the professional queens that has been on the show and is always ready to help anyone. On the second design challenge of the season, the queens had to recreate a look worn by Rupaul but the recreated look had to be suited for the queen style, basically they had to recreate the look more towards their own style of drag. Trinity had to recreate the Season 8 promo look that Rupaul wore which is a funny, chill and camp look. Trinity being a pageant queen, it was expected that she would put a classy spin into the look and that is what she did, this gown is so well constructed, i love the tulle in the bottom of the dress, the gloves (which were also in the original look) look so expensive, her silhouette looks so good and to think that she was able to walk in this dress is impressive since it seems to be difficult to walk in this type of dress especially with heels on. I was so impressed with the dress she made and was so happy when she was declared to be in Top 2 with Jaida Essence Hall. Her hard work was rewarded and rightfully so because she totally deserved and it also proved to everyone that she can do anything that she puts her mind into, she can do outfits, she can do comedy, she can do roasts, she can write lyrics and even lipsyncs (which is one of her weakest points) she knows how to perform.
Lastly we have Utica Queen from Season 13. On that season, the first design challenge was the bag ball where the third and last outfit had to be made using only bags. Utica did a whole look using only sleeping bags and created, in my opinion, a masterpiece in less than 24 hours which is already impressive since making a garment with thay type of material is not easy especially when using a sewing machine and to quite honest nobody was expecting to Utica to do such an outstanding job in terms of creating an outfit meaning, the fans (myself included) knew that she had skills and good looks on the runway but never thought she would be able to do something like this outfit. Still to this day is considered by many one of the best runway looks of Season 13 and i totally agree, the execution of this outfit is basically flawless, her makeup is so cute and well done, i love the hoodie that she did, it gives a certain edge to the outfit itself, i also love the train and the best thing about it is the way she presented this outfit on the stage, she looked like a super model on the runway doing all types of poses and giving the ultimate camping fantasy which up until that point we hadn't see from Utica since she presented herself as more of a campy "weird" queen. She was in the top for her performance on the whole ball but for some reason she didn't win the challenge and i still don't understand how because all of her 3 looks were very different and well done, she showed a different side from her and the last look (the most important one) was a total knockout, even the judges could not believe how amazing the outfit but still they gave the win to another queen who did great but not amazing as Utica did but her not winning this challenge only proved that since the beginning they (the judges and production) never saw Utica as a competitor and as a threat to the other queens in the competition, in other words, Utica was many times overlooked in the competition so other queens could shine and have an actual change on making to the top.
